Watercolor of Native American Little Moon-Crow
Artist
Greta Corens

Painting - Watercolor
Description
This watercolor of a young American Native warrior, Little Moon of the Crow tribe, was painted based on a photograph made in 1883 by Frank Jay Haynes. Source: The Montana Historical Society.
His youthful face looks tormented by the realization that the future he was born into no longer exists. His red shirt, white and black eagle plumes, his long raven black hair enveloped in black fur, the adornments of white ermine fur strips dangling from his necklace, and the silver medal he carries all make for a well-deserved entrance into a new world he must discover. I would have loved to know more about the enigmas that photographers in their urge to record a vanishing world captured. The stories of a proud pre-civilization race being forced to reinvent their future, their entitlements, and their beliefs should be of interest to the whole world! The natural beauty of this race, whether young or weathered in age, is immeasurable. So is their way of life that survived for millennia until they received blankets infected with chicken pox...

My father was half Cherokee and ashamed of it ! I on the other hand am so proud to a descendant of people as these who lived in harmony with this amazing earth and knew it is sacred
Greta Corens replied:
You are very special, LaVonne. What misconceptions can do! Fantastic for everyone that you are present!

This is an amazing portrait, and I feel so much behind his eyes, and his powerful but weary face. Your words are so insightful and do enhance your brilliant art. I am thinking, if we had let this beautiful race be, perhaps they would have discovered natural cures for all or most of our serious diseases. Sadly, we will never know. Fabulous art.
Greta Corens replied:
Yes, in answer to your point made, if we would have taken a mature stance of respect, collaboration, and discovery, we would have been so much farther ahead. Many thanks, dear Sharon, for your collaborative effort and appeciation.
